Key Factors Affecting Thermal Stability
Molecular Structure:
The higher the butadiene content, the higher the density of the double bonds and the higher the risk of oxidative degradation.
Increased acrylonitrile content improves heat resistance, but too much can lead to higher processing temperatures, which in turn exacerbates degradation.
Additives:
Antioxidants (e.g. hindered phenolics, phosphites): inhibit oxidative degradation and prolong heat stabilization.
Lubricants (e.g. calcium stearate): reduce the frictional heat generation between the melt and the equipment, reduce local overheating.
Heat stabilizers (e.g. organotin): inhibit specific degradation mechanisms (e.g. HCl removal).
Processing conditions:
The higher the temperature and the longer the residence time, the more severe the degradation.
Excessive shear (e.g. high screw speed) will aggravate molecular chain breakage.
IV. Methods to improve thermal stability
Formulation optimization:
Select ABS with a high proportion of heat-resistant monomers (e.g., high acrylonitrile content grades).
Add composite stabilizers (such as antioxidants + lubricants + metal passivators), synergistic enhancement of thermal stability.
Processing control:
Control the processing temperature within the recommended range (avoid exceeding 260 ℃), shorten the residence time of the material in the barrel.
Reduce screw speed to minimize shear heat generation and use screws with low compression ratios.
Equipment selection:
Use extruders or injection molding machines with appropriate aspect ratios to ensure that the material is heated evenly.
Clean the equipment regularly to prevent carbonization of residual material and contamination of new material.
